If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I’m doing everything right, but nothing’s happening!” or “I have a slow metabolism, and nothing’s going to change,” you’re not alone. Many of us reach a point where we feel stuck in our fitness journey, and we can’t help but blame our sluggish metabolism. But here’s the hard truth: your metabolism isn’t broken. It’s just adjusting to how you’re treating it.
Your Metabolism Isn’t Broken, It Has Adapted
First things first: your metabolism is not broken, it’s adaptive. When you diet excessively, overtrain, or skimp on recovery, your body shifts into survival mode. This doesn’t mean your metabolism is failing you; it means your body is trying to protect you by slowing down energy expenditure. Instead of focusing on your metabolism being the problem, ask yourself: What am I doing consistently, and how can I adjust to see better results?
The 90% Rule: Consistency Over Perfection
With my STRONG Girls team, I emphasize the 90 percent rule. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about consistency. Focus on your goals 90 percent of the time, and allow for 10 percent flexibility. So, what does consistency actually look like? It’s sticking to your nutrition, workouts, and recovery most days of the week. This means you’re eating mostly healthy meals, hitting your workouts, and prioritizing sleep and recovery—but you’re also allowing for the occasional treat or rest day.
Consistency isn’t about rigid perfection. It’s about creating a lifestyle that’s sustainable and realistic. When your efforts are consistent 90 percent of the time, your body will adapt and start seeing results. On the other hand, if your approach is constantly shifting, your metabolism can’t get into a steady rhythm to support the changes you’re aiming for.
If your approach is constantly shifting, your metabolism can’t get into a steady rhythm to support the changes you’re aiming for.
Habits That Stick: The STRONG Approach
We’re not about extreme diets or punishing workouts. We’re about building habits that work for your life. Are you focusing on these core habits?
Strength Training
Lifting weights isn’t just for building muscle. It revs up your metabolism and supports fat loss, giving you the strong, lean body you want.
Balanced Nutrition
Forget about cutting out food groups or restrictive diets. Instead, Instead, fuel your body with a balanced diet that includes healthy fats, protein, carbs—and flexibility.
Recovery
Sleep and stress management are key. If you’re not getting enough rest or managing your stress, your body won’t be able to build muscle or burn fat efficiently.
Daily Movement
Simple habits like walking 7-10k steps a day can support fat loss and overall health without adding unnecessary stress to your body.
Real Consistency In Action
Life happens. But if you’re showing up for yourself most days, the progress will follow. Real consistency means hitting your workouts regularly, eating balanced meals most of the time, and prioritizing recovery. It’s not about never missing a workout or always eating perfectly. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s commitment. You don’t have to be “on track” 100 percent of the time. It’s about what you do the majority of the time that counts. And when life gets in the way, being able to bounce back without guilt is key.
The Bottom Line
Stop blaming your metabolism. The truth is, it’s not about your body failing you—it’s about creating a consistent, sustainable approach to health and fitness. Focus on what you can control: your habits, your mindset, and your commitment. With the right approach, your metabolism will work with you, not against you.
